Ireland

Launching its renewable energy strategy, the Irish government today announced that it will meet its goal of generating 40% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2020.  The government also confirmed that it is engaged in trade talks with Britain to export renewable energy.

Marks & Spencer, one of the leading UK retailers, recently announced that it is doubling the amount of clean energy that its purchasing from small independent producers. This increase means Marks & Spencer will generate enough renewable energy to satisfy the electricity used by 100 M&S Simply Food Stores.

Here are two very different advanced biofuel strategies: Green Plains Renewable Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRE) is producing algae from byproducts at one of its commercial ethanol plants to make biodiesel, and Codexis, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDXS) is developing biocatalysts to produce advanced biofuel and pharmaceuticals and to remove carbon from smokestacks.

It’s not a way a country wants to reduce their carbon footprint. The global recession hit Ireland so hard that greenhouse gas emissions fell for the first time eight years – dropping 7.9% over 2008. In spite of this unplanned carbon trimming, the country is still about 5% above their Kyoto targets.
