DuPont, the leading U.S. chemical maker, and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co., a top Chinese PV panel manufacturer, reached a $100 million deal this week with the goal of boosting supplies of solar-energy materials and promoting broader adoption of solar energy worldwide.

The HIRIKO Project is an urban solution that will provide a more sustainable, more accessible electric vehicle.   The HIRIKO prototype was unveiled at the European Commission headquarters on January 24th in Brussels. 

General Motors (GM) (NYSE: GM) has launched a new program that will harness the energy of the sun to help power its electric vehicles.

Modernizing America's electric grid has been a priority for the Obama administration since taking office in 2009.  As part of its Recovery Act, the federal government dispersed $4.5 billion to the development a smart grid which can handle two-way energy flow as well as synchronize intermittent energy with baseload power.

According to market analysis conducted by IMS Research, the price of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules is dropping as a result of record high inventory levels.

NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), one of the largest power generators in the U.S. and the leading producer of power from wind and solar projects, released its Q1 2011 financial results Friday and said it had signed long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for an additional 400 megawatts (MW) of wind power since the beginning of 2011. At the end of 2010, NextEra had nearly 43,000 MW of generating capacity (approximately 53% natural gas, 19% wind, 13% nuclear, 13% oil and coal, and 2% hydro and solar), according to the company’s regulatory filings.

San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) said Tuesday it has signed a 20-year contract for up to 156 megawatts (MW) from the first phase of Sempra Generation’s Energía Sierra Juárez wind project in Baja California, Mexico. Both SDG&E and Sempra Generation are subsidiaries of Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE). 

The rapid pace of wind power technology improvements became evident today as Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OTC: VWDRY.PK) announced it had signed the first repowering contract in Portugal since the government passed legislation designed to increase the output from existing wind power farms by up to 20%.
