When its new solar panel factory in Portland, Oregon, opened for operation last week, Solopower, based in San Jose, California, qualified for a $197 million government loan guarantee.

An article on Sustainablebusinessoregon.com focuses on geothermal energy in Oregon, citing up to 19 projects in development in the state (GEA's 2012 US Geothermal Power Production and Development Report confirmed 16).

Market changes and an investment of $800 million to $1 billion over 15 years could bring more than 100 GW of geothermal energy to the US grid by 2050, according to a study recently released by a multi-disciplinary research group at MIT. That investment, is less than the cost of a single “new generation” coal-powered plant, and the amount of energy is equivalent to 200 coal-fired power plants or 100 new nuclear power plants.

The Ohio Power Siting Board, the state utility regulatory agency, has given the green light to start building the Black Fork Wind Farm, a 200-megawatt facility that will be capable of generating enough clean electricity to power 10,000 homes.

Seattle-based AltaRock Energy, Inc. and Davenport Newberry Holdings LLC of Stamford, Connecticut, geothermal energy project developers, this summer plan to test the energy potential of the Newberrry Volcano, located about 20 miles south of Bend, Oregon.
