It has been a busy week for the United States Department of Energy (DOE). Beginning Tuesday the Department has made daily announcements concerning new alternative energy funding:

Tasting Scotch whisky may not be the only activity related to the traditional Scottish beverage in the near future. A partnership comprised of major distillers of Speyside in Scotland had resulted in a joint venture called Helius CoRDE, which plans to use whisky by-products to produce energy.

Mozambique, the southeast African nation once plagued by nearly three decades of civil war, plans to push for the development of renewable energy to provide more of its population with electrical service, according to a new government strategy announced this week (currently, 95% of Mozambicans live without electricity).

Created as part of the 2008 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) mandated Farm bill, the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) provides incentives to American farmers, ranchers and forest landowners to grow biomass crops for the purpose of biofuels, heat and power.

Biofuels continue to make headlines as Google Ventures announced it is investing in CoolPlanetBiofuels. Google’s investment follows that of GE Energy Financial Services, which participated in the last round of investment.

U.S. President Barack Obama has asked congress to approve a 2012 budget that provides the Department of Energy (DOE) with US$29.5 billion.

United Kingdom-based Havana Energy Ltd. has announced a partnership with the Cuban government's Ministry of Sugar to develop technology to build biomass energy plants.
