California renewable energy standard

San Diego Gas & Electric has jumped into its first new renewable energy contracts of 2012 with commitments to purchase a combined 300 MW from two new projects.

The California state Senate has passed a bill requiring utilities to purchase 33% of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

The measure, proposed by Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), passed by a vote of 26-11, and will now head to the legislative assembly.
