CNG

While lofty expectations have being placed on the future of plug-in hybrid cars and electric trucks, another, less-heralded green transportation boom is taking place: the rise of natural gas vehicles.

Detroit-based DTE Energy Co. (NYSE: DTE) has been awarded US$5.4 million to convert 170 new gasoline-powered vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) moves over 220,000 people a day around Dallas and 12 surrounding cities. In 2010, passenger boardings of DART buses alone totaled more than 38 million.

Shares of Westport Innovations Inc. (NASDAQ: WPRT) (TSE: WTP.TO), a provider of technologies that allow internal combustion engines to run on natural gas, biomethane and hydrogen, were down six percent at mid-session today after the company Tuesday announced an increased net loss for the first nine-months of its fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.
