Massachusetts

The city of New Bedford, Mass., has announced plans to install solar panels at up to 20 city properties—schools, municipal buildings and land parcels—as part of an initiative that will ultimately generate 10 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 1,500 homes.

Touted when first announced in January of 2010 as “likely to create hundreds of jobs”, the world’s largest wood pellet plant – a joint effort between German firm RWE Innogy (ETR:RWE) and Swedish firm BMC – cost $170 million to build and occupies about 300 acres in the Waycross (Georgia) Industrial Park. RWE Innogy delivers renewable energy in Europe. BMC is a project and technology development company vested in wood-based biomass.

Solar panel manufacturer Evergreen Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ: ESLR) (NASDAQ: ESLRD), based in Marlboro, Massachusetts, said yesterday it was closing its nearby Devens manufacturer plant and laying off 800 employees by the end Q1 2011 because it can’t compete with low-cost Chinese manufacturers.

Northeast Utilities (NYSE: NU) announced its purchase of NStar (NYSE:NST) joining forces in a merger creating the largest utility in New England.
