Billionaire Richard Branson says the global economy is set to embark a disaster course unless governments do more to promote alternative energy sources to fossil fuels.

As this year’s UN-sponsored climate change talks kicked off in Cancun, slow but steady progress is being made by those in attendance.

It has not taken long for the United States' diplomatic team to establish the country's hard-nosed negotiating position at the United Nations climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico (COP16).  The nation's stance is so firm, it might lead the delegation to abandon the proceedings early.

Carbonfund.org, a leading nonprofit carbon reduction and climate change organization, has called for the United States to stay home allowing for United Nations' negotiations on climate change to make progress in Cancun,

Mexico is looking to increase its wind power capacity six-fold by 2014.

Currently the country has 500 megawatts of installed wind energy, and according to to the Latin American Wind Energy Association new wind projects will bring that capacity to 3,000 MW within three years.  The cost of these wind farms is expected to cost US$5 billion.

Louisiana officials have reported oil has washed up on Raccoon Island, one of the state's precious Barrier Islands.

 

The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says this island is sanctuary for birds, and is one of the Gulf Coast's most important waterbird breeding grounds.
