NYSE:DUK

A new project from Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) proposes the installation of large-scale batteries that store excess wind energy and discharge it during times of peak demand--not just when the turbines are in action.

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) recently issued requests for project proposals to install large-scale wind farms on the state's two Great Lakes.

Lake Erie and Lake Ontario could help New York State generate anywhere from 120MW to 500MW of energy, if the proposals are accepted.

Commercial offshore wind projects in the United States have yet to see the light of day; however, a research project conducted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will lead to the first wind turbines being placed in American waters.

Charlotte, N. Carolina-based Duke Energy (NYSE.DUK) is planning a new wind farm on Colorado’s Eastern Plains that will supply electricity to Tri-State Generation and Transmission, headquartered in Westminster, Colorado.
