Pipeline Oil Leak Spills Thousands of Barrels into Alberta River

This is a photograph supplied by Plains Midstream Canada showing oil in a marsh caused by a major pipeline leak in northwestern Alberta. About 28,000 barrels of oil were spilled in the Rainbow pipeline, which was discovered April 29, 2011.

A leaking oil pipeline has spilled 475,000 litres of sour oil in the Red Deer River and a nearby creek in Sundre, Alberta.

The spill was first identified on Thursday night when residents living just north of Sundre phoned in reports of smelling rotten eggs -- a telltale sign of sour gas or oil.

Within an hour it was identified that oil was leaking from an underground pipeline owned by Plains Midstream Canada.  This morning containment booms were set up to contain the curde oil that is flowing into waterways and threatening a key water reservoir in Central Alberta.

Plains Midstream, which operates 8,800 kilmeters of pipline systems capable of moving and storing 4.4 million barrels of crude oil in Western Canada, has shutdown operations of the Rangeland pipeline.
