Currently Mitsubishi is surveying several locations in north-east Britain. The company intends to construct a prototype offshore wind turbine within three years, and states commercial production could begin as soon as four years from now. If the production facility is approved, it will create hundreds of jobs.
This is great news for the Britain, which has been trying to establish itself as a manufacturing hub for offshore wind turbines and other materials. Recently, Clipper Windpower [6] (LON:CWP [7]) gave the United Kingdom a similar investment.
Lord Mandelson said the UK is keenly focused on becoming a leader in the offshore wind industry, "Twenty years ago, the UK was a leading centre for onshore wind technology, but we failed to capitalise on that by not providing the right climate for growth. We are determined not to let that happen again. We are creating the largest market in the world for offshore wind and we intend to build and support the industry."
