The Information Technology (IT) sector is growing at an unprecedented rate and with the growth its increasing demand for high quality power is climbing quickly. Driving that energy demand is high bandwidth internet applications and cloud computing.
In order to deal with the growing demand, companies like Lineage Power Holdings Inc. [4] have developed energy efficiency technology that creates and maintains a sustainable power infrastructure. Recognizing the value of such technology, global energy giant GE [5] (NYSE:GE [6]) has announced [7] that it has acquired Lineage Power in a transaction worth an estimated US$520 million.
With 2010 revenues of approximately US$450 million, Texas-based Lineage Power has established itself as a global leading provider of high efficiency power conversion infrastructure. With the acquisition, GE Energy will now have the resources to tap a US$20 million a year power conversion market that, in 2013, will support the deployment of an estimated 1.1 billion smartphones. GE, which controls a US$40 billion energy portfolio continues to grow its reach in the energy sector.
“The acquisition of Lineage Power provides a foundation for GE to build a platform to help the global technology sector optimize energy efficiency, with end-to-end solutions for datacenters and telecom facilities and the networking, computing and data storage devices within them, ” said Luis Manuel Ramírez, president and CEO, GE Energy, Industrial Solutions.
