The King and Queen of Spain were present at the inauguration of Abengoa Solar's (MCE:ABG) PS20 solar plant, the largest commercial solar tower plant in the world.
Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía witnessed the unveiling of this massive solar facility in Seville, Spain. According to Abengoa Chairman Fleipe Benjumea, the PS20 solar plant is powered by 100, 120-metre mirrors. The mirrors, located at the base of the tower, rotate with the sun, tracking it's movement like sunflowers. The mirrors reflect the sunlight onto a single point in the tower where the solar radiation heats a fluid which generates the steam needed to power an electricity-generating turbine.
The PS20 solar plant will generate an estimated 20 megawatts of power, which is enough electricity to power 10,000 homes. Furthermore, every year, this clean energy plant will eliminate 12,000 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted.
Abengoa's world class solar plant will also house a research center that develops new photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies.
