The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced that Horizon Wind Energy LLC will supply TVA with 44-megawatts (MW) of electricity generated by its wind farm in Iowa.
Created by President Roosevelt in 1933 and owned by the United States federal government, TVA provides electricity at prices lower than the national average to nine million people spanning seven southeastern states.
Pending "applicable environmental requirements and securing firm transmission arrangements," beginning in January 2012 TVA will receive electricity from 50 Vestas 1.65-megawatt turbines at Horizon's Pioneer Prairie wind farm in Howard and Mitchell counties.
This wind purchase agreement is the second between TVA and Horizon this year and brings TVA's total renewable wind power contracts to 1,600 MW. Currently the company, which has generated US$11.25 billion in revenues, boasts an energy portfolio with a combined 11,200 MW of carbon-free electricity.
